Today, we’re going to talk skincare. We’ve all seen the latest trendy routines – microneedling, vampire facials, chemical exfoliation. We spend so much time caring for our faces that we often forget that our skin below the neck needs attention, too.
We’d like to introduce you to our favorite independent skincare brand, Grumpy Ole Goat.
Grumpy Ole Goat is operated from a 3-generation family farm located in the mountains of northeast Alabama. The farm consists of a small herd of Nubian and Lamancha dairy goats, chickens, turkeys, some guinea fowl, several dogs including a Livestock Guardian Dog named Petra, and a Maine Coon cat.
The company was started by Alisa Lemley in 2016. Her husband, son, mother, and father each have a hand in production and product development.
Grumpy Ole Goat’s product line includes hand-crafted soaps, lotions, lip balms, and bath bombs. The secret ingredient? Goat milk!
The cream in goat’s milk is rich with emollients and natural moisturizers that are easily absorbed by the skin to create a moisture barrier, keeping the skin soft, smooth, and supple for a longer period of time.
Goat’s milk is proven to be effective in treating acne.
It is less allergenic than synthetically loaded commercial soaps. Commercial store bought soaps are a detergent, resulting in dry skin. It is known that goat’s milk can reduce skin inflammation, and soothes dry and damaged skin.
It can reduce wrinkles and delay signs of aging. Goat’s milk soap has alpha-hydroxy acids that soften the skin by breaking down the glue that holds dead skin cells together.
Goat’s milk has the closest pH level to our skin. This helps protect our skin from invading bacteria and chemicals.
It is loaded with essential nutrients and vitamins: vitamin A, B1, B6, B12, C, & E. Vitamin A being the most important for your skin.
The famous Cleopatra, known for her beauty and amazing skin, guarded her biggest skin care secret - bathing in goat’s milk.
Cold process soap making combines fixed oils, such as coconut oil, olive oil, and castor oil, with an alkali, such as sodium hydroxide or lye. The result is a chemical process called saponification, where the composition of the oils change with the help of lye to create soap.
Coconut oil speeds healing for cuts and bruises and forms a protective moisture barrier on the skin. Olive oil contains antioxidants that protect the skin from premature aging and does not clog pores. Castor oil restores the skin’s natural moisture balance and is also used to treat various skin conditions.
One of the main benefits of cold process soap making is having complete control over the ingredients, making it easy to blend fragrances and colors.
To get the gorgeous, marbled color, soap blends are poured into the molds in alternating colors, then swirled with a dowel.
The soap stays in the mold for 24-48 hours. After being removed from the mold, it is cut, then cured for 4-6 weeks. The curing process allows the excess moisture in the bars to evaporate, leaving a harder and longer lasting bar of soap.
